On June 10, 2017, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory about erectile dysfunction medications.
The agency said it was aware of concerns raised by a report from the National Institute on Sexual Health that patients taking sildenafil, the generic form of Viagra, had been found to have a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED).
The FDA has not yet issued an advisory on the topic of sildenafil, which is used to treat ED, but it has recommended that it is considered a safe drug.
Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, a urologist and director of the Sexual Medicine and Health Center at New York University Medical Center in New York, said sildenafil was approved for the treatment of ED because it is a better and safer medication than some older, older medications for ED.
In fact, in 2012, the FDA advised patients that erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra were safe and effective, as well as the drug's generic equivalent, sildenafil.
But the FDA said sildenafil did not have the same efficacy as other ED medications such as tadalafil and vardenafil. And the agency said it was reviewing the safety and efficacy of sildenafil, not the efficacy of Viagra, for patients taking these drugs.
“I think it’s important that we understand the potential side effects and what they may mean to the patient,” said Dr. Kesselheim. “We don’t know what causes erectile dysfunction, but we do know that sildenafil has a greater side effect profile than other medications that treat ED. And there are many other medications that treat ED that could potentially cause side effects, including nitrates.”
